“Hello, I can hear you, but I can’t see you”
Familiar words during online meetings. Not so much of an issue if it is your parents, but more so if it’s a new client who is uttering the words to you.
Despite businesses pivoting to Zoom and MS Teams as the main way to conduct meetings, blank screens continue to hold up online meetings. It can be frustrating, and just a little bit of forward planning should nip the problem firmly in the bud.
Below are the best ways to avoid the dreaded blank screen and issues with Zoom video not working as well as how to overcome the problem during online meetings.
1. Seems basic – but does your device have a built-in camera? Most modern devices do, but if not, you will need to buy one to attach to your screen.
2. Check that your video is working in advance of a call. All major virtual meeting tools enable video testing before dialling in. As the organizer or person running the meeting, it reflects badly on your organizational skills and professionalism if it’s your Zoom video not working.
3. If you’ve tested it and your Zoom video is still not working, check your settings. One easy way to do this is to search ‘camera’ on your PC or laptop, switch to the video option and take a quick 5 second video. If you can see and hear yourself, you can be certain that you will be seen and heard by your fellow online meeting participants.
4. If your video is working, but not during the call, ensure that the video icon on the bottom left of the Zoom screen does not have a diagonal red line through it as this means it is switched off.
5. If this still does not fix the issue, click the arrowhead beside the video camera icon and manually try different cameras to see if one will start your video feed.
6. If your Zoom video is still not working, check your device for app / software package updates. All software programs release upgrades and it is important install the latest version.
7. Still not working? At this point, try uninstalling the app and then reinstalling it.
The above are easy steps to take, yet there is no guarantee that your colleagues, clients, or suppliers have this knowhow.
