‘Oh man, not another online meeting!’
Zoom Fatigue became a familiar term around mid-2020, a mere 3-4 months after workers the world over were still asked to work from home. People are by their very nature, sociable beings, yet uncomfortable but necessary isolation guidelines robbed people of their ability to interact directly with others in person.
For the first time in just under two years, there are genuine relaxations on physical distancing, with the hope that life and the workplace will return to normal, as the narrative turns to ‘learning to live with Covid.’
However, business leaders have witnessed the many benefits of online meetings, including flexible-working, increased productivity, reduced travel and accommodation costs. Therefore, online meetings are here to stay and are as much a part of day-to-day business life as checking-off tasks on a ‘to-do list.’
Focus therefore must be given to legislating against online meeting fatigue to ensure that the effectiveness of such gatherings are maximized and that the participants are engaged.
Here are a few easy to implement tips to spice up your Zoom meetings:
Mix Things Up
Are you taking advantage of all that Zoom has to offer? There is so much more that you can do while hosting an online event than screen-sharing a PowerPoint. Try mixing presentations up by adding polls and quizzes, creating group activities in breakout rooms, use the whiteboard and even queue up some videos.
Video Filters
Get creative with video filters. Ask your attendees to put on a funny hat or a goofy mask using the video filter feature to really break the ice at the start of your next virtual meeting. This obviously will not be ideal for high-level meetings, but it is a bit of occasional fun for in-house online meetings.
Take More Breaks
It can be exhausting making eye contact with your fellow online meeting participants for hours on end. So, take short breaks to grab water, stick the coffee pot on, stretch your legs, and come back refreshed and engaged for the next segment of the meeting. A five-minute break can do wonders to keep attendees engaged.
